William Peter Blatty on "The Exorcist" From Novel to Screen eBook William Peter Blatty

William Peter Blatty discusses the origins of his novel "The Exorcist," then provides his original screenplay, then a commentary on what the director, William Friedkin, felt needed to be changed. Although his prefatory commentary is entertaining and engaging at times, the original screenplay itself is not terribly compelling and seems to suffer from the same defects as the eventual movie. I'm quite surprised at how many camera instructions Blatty includes in the original script, something that is frowned upon and largely ignored by directors, and which experienced screenwriters generally avoid. Blatty's somewhat corny attempts at cynical humor are always diverting, but his script for "Promise Her Anything" is far, far more accomplished.

William Peter Blatty on "The Exorcist" From Novel to Screen eBook William Peter Blatty Reviews

This book is a must have for anyone who enjoyed the movie or the book. It essentially is two different screenplays of the Exorcist. It contains the original version of the script as well as the script used in the film. It also talked about differences between the original draft of the book and the final published draft. With explanations about why certain aspects were changed for the final versions of the book and the movie. Very nice book!
I bought this book in paperback when it was first released in the seventies and read it cover to cover. It's a great behind the scenes look at the production, which also features Blatty's ham-handed first draft screenplay. At the very end is Blatty's transcription of the final movie, which was much more faithful to his brilliant novel than the first script he wrote. Read this, then check out William Friedkin's autobiography, The Friedkin Connection, to hear the director's side of things. The Exorcist is a classic movie, perfectly made. An excellent piece of cinema based on an excellent novel. And this book is a great glimpse into how it all came to be.
This is largely a reprint of two drafts of the script which can be found easily on the Internet of over is even interested. Very little otherwise, here, by way of other content. Frankly, a rip-off.
